- During a CT Coronary Angiography, the patient is positioned inside a CT scanner, where a series of X-ray images are acquired from different angles around the body. These images are then processed by a computer to create cross-sectional views of the heart and coronary arteries. With the aid of contrast dye injected into the bloodstream, the coronary arteries become highlighted, enhancing their visibility on the images.
- CT Coronary Angiography offers several advantages over traditional invasive coronary angiography, including its non-invasive nature, shorter examination time, and lower risk of complications. It is particularly useful for patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD), as it provides detailed information about the extent and severity of arterial blockages without the need for catheterization.
- This imaging modality is valuable for diagnosing CAD, assessing the presence and characteristics of coronary artery plaques, identifying the location and severity of stenosis, and evaluating the overall coronary artery anatomy. It can also be used to assess the presence of other cardiac abnormalities, such as congenital anomalies or cardiac tumors.
- CT Coronary Angiography plays a crucial role in the risk stratification and management of patients with suspected or known CAD, guiding treatment decisions and helping to optimize patient outcomes. It is particularly beneficial for patients with equivocal stress test results, those with atypical symptoms suggestive of CAD, or individuals at intermediate risk for cardiovascular events.
- Overall, CT Coronary Angiography is a valuable diagnostic tool in cardiology, providing comprehensive evaluation of the coronary arteries with high sensitivity and specificity. Its non-invasive nature, excellent image quality, and ability to accurately detect and characterize coronary artery disease make it an essential component of modern cardiac imaging practice.
